In 1915, the French government needed all the cannon fodder it could get. Paris developed a plan to draw on the immense manpower resources of its Russian ally, in exchange for a few shipments of weapons.
The two brigades, arriving in France in 1916, received the news of the February Revolution with great enthusiasm. Following the disastrous Nivelle offensive in April, the brigades mutinied. They were removed from the front and interned in La Courtine, but to no effect: the unrest persisted and was severely repressed.
