First published in 2002, this volume set out, by sheer arrangement of the essays, to shed light on the political underpinnings of a body of work that has never shied away from the turmoil of history. It covers the sociologist's outspoken interventions during the Algerian war in the early 1960s, his insights into the mechanisms of propagation of the dominant ideology, and his analysis of the perpetuation of inequalities in the education system.
Twenty years on, the reception of Pierre Bourdieu's work and the perception of his public persona remain mixed. It is all the more necessary to clarify the way in which, throughout his life, the sociologist negotiated the demands of the scholar and the commitments of the intellectual.
