Between the Plebs and the Elite

The comic strip seems to have been born to become a visually demanding literary genre, capable of telling stories in a completely new manner. Close to a century was however necessary before the comic strip became fully recognized as a form in itself. The popularity of comic books however has met with condescension, distrust and contempt almost everywhere. Authors have set out to treat adult and serious subjects and to produce works of undeniable artistic quality, while scholars have shown a passion for the extraordinary technical potential of the comic book's language, at the expense however, of sometimes belittling the comic strip's popular roots and following.
