This essay can be read as a political account of the last quarter of a century, a contemporary portrait with the features removed. But also as an attempt to explain Emmanuel Macron’s success. The author takes us back 25 years, to the fall of the USSR in 1989 and the roots of the implosion of our policy areas. It reveals the revolutionary myth and the class struggles within societies being gradually replaced by identity, territorial and religious groups, assisted by the birth of a global ecological thinking. At the same time, industrial society is transforming into a digital and collaborative society. But in our totally connected society, will we be able to recreate an inclusive politics, including in terms of debate, when we are reduced to a democracy of tweets and followers? A weighty examination of our future.
