A Girl With No History

How can one be "a girl with no history" while being the daughter of an Algerian and a French woman in France during the Algerian War? Daughter of Ali and Huguette, who met at the factory, Lil's real name is Lila, which sounds less French. Her mother endures poverty and racism, exhaustion, and sickness; her father, worn down by factory labor and injustice, increasingly turns to alcohol and bitterness. Lil navigates between the bars her father frequents and children's shelters. There, she learns about sharing, culture, and solidarity. Initially believing she has no history, she later seeks to escape it. Ultimately, she embraces herself as the proud progeny of a mixed heritage, of a history she has come to terms with.
