Man and his Marks

This work is a sophisticated updating of the book Des signes et des hommes released in France in 1983 (English: Signs and Symbols, 1989), the fruit of many years of thinking by Adrian Frutiger throughout his career as a typeface designer, teacher and educator.
Adrian Frutiger leads the reader on a discovery of the genesis of elemental marks and the development of signs and symbols in everyday human life, through the millennia and cultures, and what we do with them today: understanding and designing a sign, establishing language by signs, how a sign evolves into a symbol, a distinguishing mark, a signal.
