Science, a profession and a calling

Here, Isabelle Kalinowski offers a new translation of one of Max Weber’s most famous writings, La Science, profession et vocation (Science, a profession and a calling). It is followed by a long essay, the Leçons wébériennes sur la science et la propagande (Weberian lessons about science and propaganda). Enriched with the translation of numerous unpublished extracts, it deals with 5 themes: the sociology of the scientist’s calling, the theory of charisma, the cult of the guru-poet Stefan George, the connection between scientists and politics, and to finish, the subjection of the university to the capitalistic organization of work.

Isabelle Kalinowski is a researcher at the CNRS (Centre de Sociologie européenne). She has translated and presented the following works by Max Weber: L’Ethique protestante et l’esprit du capitalisme (Protestant Ethics and the spirit of capitalism) and Hindouisme et Bouddhisme.
